Restoring Hope, Dignity, and Faith in Mfangano Island
Our Mission
Intended Impact
OUR STORY
Founded in the year 2000, Shalom Christian Centre is a Christian organization established by Rev. Felix Orebo and his wife, Rose Orebo, founders of the Suba Bible Translation and Literacy (BTL) Project. We are located in Mfangano Island, Homa Bay County, within Suba West Sub-County, Kenya.
Our work began as a response to the devastating effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, which left many children orphaned and families broken. From the beginning, our mission has been rooted in compassion, faith, and a commitment to restoring hope to the most vulnerable members of our community. While working in Bible translation and literacy, the founders witnessed firsthand the suffering caused by HIV/AIDS across Mfangano Island. Many children were forced to drop out of school and turn to child labor and other harmful practices simply to survive. Widows and widowers were left without support, dignity, or means of livelihood.
As the number of orphaned children increased, accommodating them in the founders’ home became unsustainable. Guided by God’s calling, Rev. Felix and Rose Orebo established an orphanage—not just as a shelter, but as a safe, nurturing environment where children could receive basic needs, quality education, and spiritual nourishment.
This vision was driven by a desire to break the cycle of poverty and equip children to become responsible, productive individuals capable of rebuilding their lives and communities.
